Dutch company Breeder Plants entered the plant, Perovskia atripliciflolia ‘Lacey Blue’ into the new plants competition at this year’s Green is Life exhibition in Poland and it won a bronze medal.
Total sales of the plant in the USA this year will exceed 120,000 and more than 30,000 will be sold in Europe.
Catt said the Perovskia was proving to be popular. "It is dwarf in habit with a large head of blue flowers."
He added: "They do droop with the rain but they tend to spring back quite quickly because the stems are not too long. So it fits in a small garden and has the features people want."
The plant has narrow lobed grey-green leaves and is resistant to frost.
Catt is the breeder of a number of plants which have become household names including the incredibly successful Choisya ‘Sundance’.
He said that he would be introducing another perovskia in the next year.
