Woodland Trust to mark Great War centenary with new woods

The Woodland Trust has announced plans to create four new woods totalling over 400 hectares in each of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The English Centenary Wood will be created on a 260-hectare site near Epsom, Surrey, where around 200,000 trees will be planted, while sites have also been identified in the other three UK regions. Members of the public will be able to dedicate trees to ancestors at the sites.

The trust will also make available over 3 million free trees to schools, community groups and youth groups for planting in their area.

Project director Karl Mitchell said: "The trees planted during this £12 million project will stand for hundreds of years, providing a lasting tribute to all those involved in the First World War. We hope to see many thousands of people getting involved by planting their own tribute or dedicating trees in memory of loved ones."

Sainsbury's, a long-time funder of the Trust's work, will support the initiative.
