Woodland Trust campaigns to turn Xmas cards into trees

Recycling old Christmas cards could bring glad tidings to campaigners trying to raise enough cash to plant nearly 20,000 trees.

The Woodland Trust hopes to better last year's drive, which saw over 73 million cards dropped off at branches of at shops to fund the planting of 17,000 trees.

Spooks and Cold Feet actress Hermione Norris headed up this year's campaign to help the Woodland Trust plant the trees.

Cards collected during January are taken to paper mills to be recycled into new products. Cash raised will help the trust plant trees in some of its 1,000 UK woods.

"As well as creating woodland it stops waste going to landfill, resulting in harmful methane being pumped into the atmosphere," said chief executive Sue Holden.

"Recycling just one card each at participating WH Smith, Tesco, TK Maxx and Marks & Spencer stores can help us move closer to doubling native woodland in the UK."

Currently, only 12% of the country is wooded, compared to the European average of 44%, said Holden.

Norris said: "Instead of throwing away cards, pop them in the special bins provided to enable the trust to plant thousands more trees."
