The first seeds of the Garden Retail-award-winning centre were sown in 1959 by Lawrence Newton, the year current managing director Chris Milan was born. Newton, who started the business as a market garden growing vegetables, is still growing vegetables but the business now has a £8.5m turnover and is one of the largest independent garden centres in the UK, employing 170 staff.
Newton and Millan will speak on the past, present and future of the horticulture industry at Woodcote's open week event on 8-17 September. During the open week visitors will get a chance to take a look behind the scenes on a tour around the 12ha site in Wallington, Surrey.
