Hull-based William Jackson already owns conventional root vegetable supplier Parripak and leafy salad supplier Hazeldene, as well as the Aunt Bessie's prepared foods brand.

Founded in the late 1980s, Abel & Cole is one of the oldest and largest vegegable box schemes in the country. Co-founder Keith Abel previously sold the business to private equity firm Phoenix in 2007, buying it back when it was hit by falling sales brought about by the economic downturn.

Abel will to continue to run the business under its new owners. He said: "By joining a family business, which respects and understands us, we can carry on delivering the best veg boxes imaginable to our wonderful customers."
