This includes greeting every customer who walks through the door. "Every customer wants to be made to feel important. A happy customer will return. They also tell their friends and family."
By walking customers to the products, telling them what growing media they need and correct pruning techniques and disease controls instills confidence, he says. "By going the extra mile my customers come back every week, which helps to achieve higher sales."
Foulkes explains that the Garden Centre Group management trainee programme has helped him build his career. He has worked in every department and every aspect of garden centre management.
He has improved his skills in the planteria by working at peak times. Inside, Foulkes has focused on effective running of checkouts and ensuring that the right products are ordered.
He says his communication skills have developed, enabling him to work better with staff and customers. High on his list of lessons learned is dealing with issues under pressure.
