Taylors director Adam Taylor said: "Westland came to the conclusion to call it quits and felt we were the best company for doing the job. We won't keep the Unwins name. Westland will keep it to sell seeds and we're recommending that Unwins customers should speak to Taylors about bulbs."
Taylors will also start an extra packing line to give the company extra capacity in season. The move is expected to bring extra garden centre, independent retailer and hardware customers in the UK and Ireland. Westland will continue to concentrate on its seed, compost and controls businesses.
- In other acquisitions news, garden centre furniture supplier Alexander Rose Furniture has been taken over by the Roda Group, which also owns US-based Jensen Leisure Furniture and one-million hectares of Bolivian Forest Stewardship Council forestland.
Alexander Rose sales manager Chris Newman said: "Basically it means we have better security and bigger goals. We can hold more stock, increase product ranges and overall be a better supplier."
