The strawberries were grown in glasshouses by West Sussex grower Harry Hall, who has supplied the retailer for over 20 years.

The mild winter has brought them to ripeness a week earlier than last year, the supermarket said, adding the it expected 180 stores to be stocking English fruit by the end of next week.

Its strawberry buyer Nicki Baggott added: "It's a real treat to be tucking into English strawberries earlier than usual, and if the milder temperatures continue as predicted, we're set to see a bumper harvest."
