UPM Tilhill award for tree work on WWII memorial

UPM Tilhill is celebrating an award for project work on a unique armed forces memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.

The national monument special award, presented late last month, recognised the first national memorial dedicated to UK armed forces killed by terrorists since World War Two.

The firm had to plant 57 4m-tall evergreen oaks Quercus Ilex in 500-litre containers on the site in Alrewas, Staffordshire. Each tree was valued at £2,500.

Soft landscaping was completed by the laying of 9,000-sq m of turf and the garden was officially opened by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in late 2007.

Liam O'Connor Architects designed the memorial, which includes a Portland stone structure engraved with 16,000 names. UPM Tilhill was awarded the £200,000 landscaping contract from Geoffrey Osborne.
