Upgrades credited for RHS Harlow Carr visitor lift

RHS Garden Harlow Carr enjoyed its best ever year, welcoming more than 290,000 visitors and members in the past 12 months.

Liz Thwaite, head of the garden in Harrogate, said: "In the recession people are travelling abroad less but it is also a tribute to the work we are doing."

Thwaite said recent improvements also helped nudge up visitor numbers. "We have completed projects including the expansion of the Queen Mother's lake, the planting of 250,000 spring bulbs."

Next year's target was 300,000 visitors and new projects would include a family-oriented tree-house and a push to draw people into 11ha of woodland, plus enhancement of the kitchen garden to showcase more of the productive work.
