The business, which supplies turf throughout the county and in Surrey, West Sussex, Berkshire, Dorset and into the Channel Islands, said on its Turf Centre website it believed it was the country’s leading grower.

Company director George Fothergill did not comment on why it had stopped growing turf. But other areas of the company, which also supplies soil products and fertilisers, remain unchanged and his company continues to trade as normal.

A recorded telephone message said the company had "ceased growing turf" and was no longer taking orders for the delivery of just turf.

It said, however, it was harvesting existing stocks of turf daily, which could be delivered with orders for topsoil.
