Toro and Lely honour outstanding Wembley Stadium trainee groundsman

Wembley Stadium Turf Scholarship sponsors Toro and Lely UK have presented a teenager with a plaque for his high-quality groundsmanship work.

Aiden Ryan, 19, is due to complete his one-year scholarship this August, and is gaining hands-on experience at the home of English football.

"I'm relishing what's left of my time here at Wembley Stadium and continue to learn from my colleagues about turf management," said Aiden Ryan.

"This has been a fantastic stepping stone for my career. I'd like to join a football club in the London area."

His mentor, grounds manager Steve Welch, said having seen inaugural scholarship winner James Pope go on to join Tottenham Hotspur, the "sky's the limit" for Ryan.

"Professional football groundsmanship is not an easy thing to get into, but this scholarship has equipped him with the practical skills and industry experience he needs to take the next steps towards a bright future."

Lely's Toro general manager Peter Mansfield said: "A year working at one of the world's most famous stadiums will stand him in extremely good stead as his career progresses."

The scholarship was set up two years ago by Wembley Stadium and is sponsored by turf maintenance equipment manufacturer Toro and its UK distributor, Lely UK, in association with Oaklands College.
