Landscape industry consolidation is a key factor influencing Horticulture Week's top 50 ranking of the biggest landscape construction and maintenance operators by turnover.

The Top 50 UK Contractors ranking is the first of its kind to be published covering the UK contracting market - and captures the big changes taking place at the top of the landscape construction and maintenance industries.

The business in the list are made up of the professionals who build and maintain the landscapes that enhance our housing developments, parks, commercial properties, schools, hospitals and more. We have chosen to include specialist contractors working in areas such as forestry and sports in our list. The source of the figures is Companies House, unless stated otherwise.

Consolidation has been gaining pace over the past few years, with idverde and Nurture Landscapes in particular growing substantially as a result of acquisition. At the time of writing there were two big changes to leading players in the market.

One of our Top 50 dropped out due to a takeover — Gavin Jones became part of Nurture Landscapes on 1 February - and ISS Facility Services Landscaping was renamed Tivoli after private equity firm Sullivan Street Partners bought it from ISS on 20 February.

We have separated facilities management companies from the main list as although they may have significant landscape operations, these are part of a much wider business.
