The bid to Arun District Council for permission to build 107 houses on the site has come from Eric Wall Holdings and another firm, Epitair.
A statement to the local press from the companies’ planning agent, Pierre Dowsett, said: "The glasshouses on site are outdated and coming to the end of their usable life.
"Heating issues mean that they are less sustainable than more modern glasshouse structures, which have multiple spanned ridged roofs, are lower in profile and utilise modern thermal glass."
Eric Wall commercial manager Paul Faulkner told Grower: "Hopefully it's a long-term plan. We wouldn't want to comment further at this stage."
Planning approval for a new glasshouse to the south of the current site was granted in 2010.
