She pointed out that a key question for retail suppliers was how to address the shrinking floor space given over to plants in so many garden centres.
She explained that one solution is to work more closely with the retailer. "They don't know how to do the best for both of you," said Kossoff. Suppliers should consider going into centres to support sales. "Don't underestimate the possibility of turning that into paid training," she added.
In a wide-ranging talk in which she urged delegates to look outward rather than inward, to research, and to learn from mistakes, she said the best businesses would be the ones that get through. "If all you do is look inward and not outward then you won't be a survivor."
