Students help to assess Notthingham competition entries

Nottingham in Bloom has recruited horticulture students at Nottingham Trent University to help assess Britain in Bloom entries and give them a career edge.

The students will hone skills gained on a BTEC diploma in horticulture by scrutinising entries to the Britain in Bloom It's Your Neighbourhood awards. The exercise will give them an idea of the varied projects across the city.

It's Your Neighbourhood awards celebrate community groups that have made a difference to their neighbourhood through planting and other green initiatives. Groups are scored on gardening, environmental responsibility and community work.

Senior lecturer in horticulture Caroline Wright said: "Horticulture is varied and experiences such as these can help the students decide which career path they would like to take, as well as giving them an edge in the jobs market."

Last year, 40 Nottingham groups gained It's Your Neighbourhood awards, including sheltered housing complexes, streets, churches and tenant groups and residents' associations.
