The association which commemorated its 50th anniversary with a tree planting at RHS Wisley this week, released the results of the survey which attracted 344 responses on the same day.
The association's chairman Jago Keen planted an Acer campestre 'Streetwise' donated by Hillier at Wisley's Jubilee Arboretum.
Some 30 per cent believed winter 2013/14 was the most severe for damage to trees for 20 years, with a further 30 per cent saying it was worst for a decade.
Keen said: "The storm was considered to be the worst on the last two decades and resulted in the loss of more defective (57 per cent) than healthy trees (43 per cent). If we are to sustain the health benefits of trees we need to ensure trees are absolutely healthy."
