EcoG, which stands for "ecological garden", specialises in roof gardens. Founder Ren Fei was a senior executive at a domestic bank before he and three partners opened EcoG with a 1 million yuan investment in 2003.
In 2011, the company's revenue totalled 50 million yuan, with a growth rate of 30-40 per cent every year. More than 70 per cent of the income is derived from what Ren called the "haute couture gardening service", according to The China Daily newspaper.
Stein said he was looking forward to seeing EcoG sites on shopping centre roofs in Shanghai.
EcoG plans to open another 30 garden centres in Shanghai by the end of 2014.
