Stand up to HSE, says play expert

A play expert has called on professionals to stand up to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

Risk management professor David Ball said £1bn had been spent on rubber surfacing and railings over 20 years. But figures suggested no “downward trend” on the 40,000 or so accidents a year. “The industrial approach is creeping into the public sector,” he said. “I’m very worried about the HSE. It has done many good things, but it’s using the wrong value system for play spaces. “We have to stand up collectively and say ‘this is crazy: you are destroying our environment and the world of our children’. “We have to be brave, I admit that.” Douglas Hulyer, board member for Natural England and Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “We need to come out fighting and ask how are we going to take on the HSE. “We have to fight them if we are to make the changes we need in the natural environment.”
