Deputy chairman Sarah Squire said she sees the programme as a long-term partnership with the RHS, adding that initatives such as this are key to Squire’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
Squire’s staff at all levels are now given training appropriate to their job role, complementing the Garden Centre Association's e-learning.
There are three stages of training: S1 (Beginners) for plant sales assistants and till staff, S2 (intermediate) for department heads and S3 (advanced) for managers.
There is an exam once the training is complete with students gaining a pass, merit or distinction.
In the last year, 50 employees gained the qualification and Squire’s is on target for another 50 to qualify this year.
Squire added: "The training supports our employees’ careers in horticulture and our staff come away feeling passionate, inspired and excited about the knowledge they gained, which is great for them and great for our business."
