Les Turner said his new secret weapon was a bespoke irrigation system with a purpose-made nozzle and a trajectory steep enough to clear the headstones.
The American Battle Monuments Commission cemetery and memorial site in Madingley, Cambridge, hit the switch on its Toro GDC controller system last month.
"The 754 adapted sprinklers are perfect because standard sprinklers would otherwise hit the marble and wear it down," Turner explained. "The system is 100 times better than our old one, which was breaking down four or five times a year. The new Toro system saves a lot of time and effort."
The new kit included a combination of spray and drip irrigation across the 12ha site. The technology was specially manufactured by Toro. Lely UK, which distributes Toro irrigation products in the UK and Ireland, supplied the kit.
