As part of the 200-acre Greenwich Peninsula regeneration scheme, developer Knight Dragon appointed Blakedown Sport & Play to carry out the design and build of its new golf driving range complex. The multimillion-pound project occupies 300 yards of frontage along the River Thames and houses 60 bays over two tiers. It has a 230-yard fairway laid with nearly 20,000sq m of synthetic grass with raised greens, markers and flags.

Rattan sofas and tables are positioned in each bay, offering guests a table service from the bar and restaurant in the setting of spectacular views of Canary Wharf, the Thames and the O2 Arena.

Blakedown Sport & Play was responsible for the complete development including all appropriate design works, co-ordinating with the overall site, restaurant company and retail outlet.

The site was a mixture of derelict buildings, spoil mounds, a lorry park and industrial wasteland. Earthworks and site clearance involved completely reprofiling the site to create plateaus for the outfield and building elements.

The judges commented: "The contractor has demonstrated a range of both landscaping and construction disciplines in the creation of this temporary driving range close to the O2 Arena. Construction of a two-tier building, erection of high fencing, installation of artificial turf and floodlighting as well as other buildings by the contractor provided the clients with a one-stop shop. Designed by the contractor, this project was a huge challenge and presented a not insignificant level of risk. It represents an excellent use of space and has been very well installed."
