Sir Terry Leahy to retire

Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy is to retire. He will be replaced by Tesco director Philip Clarke. Sir Terry joined the firm in 1979 and became chief in 1997.

Under his leadership, the number of UK stores has more than quadrupled to almost 2,500 and profits soared to £3.2bn last year on sales of £57bn.
