Short film to promote DED-resistant elm planting in London

The Conservation Foundation has launched a short film to spread the word about its Ulmus Londinium campaign.

Ulmus londinium - an elm programme for London

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Ernest Cook Trust, Ulmus Londinium aims to record exisiting elms within London, replant more, and raise awareness of their heritage, from the first water pipes to furniture, lock gates, bridges and coffins.

Elms for replanting come from the foundation’s Great British Elm Experiment, a national project to provide young trees propagated from mature, healthy elms apparently resistant to Dutch elm disease. It has so far involved hundreds of schools, community groups and individuals all over the country.

The saplings for London are being grown on now at a nursery set up by Lambeth-based environmental and educational charity Roots and Shoots.

Next year, the foundation is offering an elm sapling to Londoners who live in a place with 'elm' in its name and a suitable place to plant it to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and its own 30th anniversary.

Anyone who lives in Elm Park, Elmcourt, Elm Grove, Elm Avenue and so on and would like to receive a tree in 2012 can register their interest by emailing with Ulmus londinium in the subject line.
