Seed firms to host annual open days with brassica focus

The UK's biggest seed suppliers are once again inviting field vegetable growers, packers and consultants to Boston, Lincolnshire, next month to view their best products.

This year's annual vegetable open days are taking place on 12-13 October at locations in the Boston region.

Seed companies taking part include Clause, Elsoms, Nickerson-Zwaan, Rijk Zwaan, Sakata, Seminis/Monsanto and Tozer.

Established and new organic and conventional varieties will be on display, with brassicas being the main focus of the events.

Clause, for example, will be displaying new broccoli selections available commercially this season and including the main season Kuba F1, the slightly later Kechua F1 and the "extremely early" variety Sirtaki F1.

Rijk Zwaan, meanwhile, is showing off its new early-summer cauliflower Stabilis RZ as well as two processing cabbages that have been grown on its trial plot.

Nickerson-Zwaan is displaying its baby pointed cabbages NiZ 15-850 F1 and NiZ 15-877 F1, as well as a "promising" large white cabbage - NiZ 17-1265 and the Brussels sprout NiZ 16-487 F1.

Some seed companies, such as Sakata and Tozer, are also displaying squashes, pumpkin and beetroot.

Other firms, such as Elsoms, are inviting growers to view trials of pre-market and existing pesticides.
