Royal Park mowing reduction mooted

Swathes of formal grassland in the Royal Parks may be left unmowed to encourage wildlife as part of measures to make them more eco-friendly.

Royal Parks chief executive Mark Camley, addressing the Greater London Assembly's environment committee last week on plans to devolve power from the Government to the mayor, Boris Johnson, said the organisation was keeping regimes under review.

He said the current practice of leaving strips of longer grass near paths may be expanded, and there were no plans to create more formal sports areas.

"There are 300,000 users of pitches in the parks. A similar-sized, less formal area can take many more people."
