The RHS has officially registered the flower, a small red decorative type, as the David Craig Dahlia after the former chairman of shipping and energy services company the Craig Group, who died last year. The RHSA has appointed his son, Douglas, as its president-elect - he will take office in January.
"The David Craig Dahlia is a great tribute to such an inspirational man and the resulting blooms are beautiful," said Douglas Craig. "It is also a great privilege for me to be asked by the RHSA to be its president-elect in what represents another poignant mark of respect to my father who enjoyed a very active role with this society."
David Craig was president of the Chrysanthemum & Dahlia Society, whose secretary, Donald Buchan, applied to the RHS to name the plant along with hybrid dahlia grower Douglas Stewart.
