Horticulture Week's seventh exclusive industry annual ranking which sees garden centre outlets from across the UK ranked according to their turnover, places Longacres Bagshot in the top slot for another year - just ahead of Bents in Glazebury, Cheshire.

Wyevale Garden Centre group's figures are now fully detailed in the ranking following its owner's decision to sell the business in May. The figures show how sales have fallen and then stablised at many Wyevale centres in the last few years.

Figures for Blue Diamond, Notcutts, Squire's, Frosts, Klondyke and smaller independents are generally positive.

Dobbies figures are fairly flat. Chief financial officer Sharon Glass said: "Performance within a number of our general merchandise categories was disappointing during the second half of the year ending February 2018 due to a change in our ranging strategy.

"We have since carried out a thorough review of the contributing factors and are confident that the key issues have been addressed. We have listened to our customers’ feedback and used that insight to ensure we are sourcing the ranges that they are looking for and offering them quality products at great prices.

"Our sales performance for the current year has been much stronger and we’ve notched up a number of sales records this year. Like for like sales have been strong and we’ve seen particular success in our plants and gardening category. The beautiful summer has also encouraged sales of outdoor living and BBQs to soar."
