Retail success for amenity growers

Amenity growers are finding some success after diversifying into retail sales.

Amenity stock specialist Boningale Nurseries is supplying new plant collections to Dobbies, as well as plants to Bransford Webbs for sale to garden centres.

Thirty per cent of Johnsons of Whixley's sales are made in retail markets. Director Andrew Richardson said Homebase, a major customer, is good to deal with because of accurate electronic point-of-sale records and its flexible approach to stock.

Meanwhile, Robin Tacchi Plants has worked with the retail market, but marketing director Gill Tacchi said it is now concentrating on amenity growing.

She added: "There's a lot of changes going on in the amenity market so we want to focus on that. There have been difficulties in the retail sector and demand on the amenity side is requiring all our focus."
