AWARD WON: Retail Sales Team of the Year
Location: West London
Head of retail: Imogen Driver
Tell me about your key goals/priorities as a business for 2019.
To create as much profit as we can - every penny of profit goes back into Kew so it is essential to make sure this is maximised. To achieve this next year we will be focusing on our core customer and growing best-selling categories while looking for new categories and products. We will expand the retail offer around the gardens through pop-ups, new shops and shop expansions, and we aim to increase our average transaction value by offering expensive one-off pieces that link to exhibitions. We will also continue growing our Kew Branded exclusive product offer.
What do you feel will be the biggest challenge for you as a business (or for your sector) in 2019 – and why?
Brexit and all its unknowns will be sure to affect us in some way; quite possibly our overseas visitor numbers and in turn our retail income. I’m also concerned about competing with our fantastic sales in 2018, which have been buoyed by the amazing weather. If we have a wet summer next year and a cold spring and autumn then it will be extremely hard to compete on 2018's sales.
What do you regard as the biggest opportunity for you as a business (or for your sector) in 2019 – and why?
We have an amazing exhibition coming to our gardens in 2019, work by glass sculptor Dale Chihuly, which we hope will being many visitors and in turn customers. It could also potentially bring a different customer profile into our shops and therefore a great opportunity for growing sales.
What was the best thing about winning a Horticulture Week Business Award for you as a business?
It brings recognition of all of the hard work we do as well as the fantastic growth we've enjoyed over the last year. It also rewards – and proves – the pride we have not just for the gardens but for all of the new ways of working we have implemented, our successes and sales. Finally it's great for morale, and it is a boost to know that we are a winning team.
