Project lead - hard landscaping, planting and green SuDS at Manchester Airport

High-quality hard landscaping, planting and green SuDS are needed at a £50m mixed-use project at Manchester Airport.

The project comprises two six-storey office buildings with retail and catering uses set within a 3.41-hectare site.

A bridge to the development leads to a plaza with "high quality hard landscaping" which, landscape architect Planit-IE says, "has the potential to create a unique and active entrance to the future wider Airport City North Masterplan that maximises key views and connectivity to the wider development."

The landscape design envisions tree-lined streets, raised planters with seating and café spill out space, which will also work with any future adjacent development as part of the masterplan. Lighting and seating elements are integral to encourage activity day and night and will also help with wayfinding.

Soft landscaping is planned for along the M56 spur to filter views, mitigate undesirable noise, enhance micro-climatic conditions, improve biodiversity and add seasonal interest and colour.

The green SuDS includes bioretention areas within the landscape which will be used to intercept runoff from hard paved areas where possible and convey it to the primary attenuation storage.

Trees specified: Acer campestre, Acer campestre elsrijk, Acer campestre Streetwise, Acer platanoides Deborah, Betula pendula, Betula utilis Jacquemontii, Carpinus betulus Fastigiata, Castanea sativa, Liriodendron tulipifera, Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer, Quercus robur, Quercus rubra And Salix pentandra.
