On 14 April, Countryfile presenter Tom Heap highlighted the lack of plant pathologists. He tried to interest secondary school pupils in a career in horticulture by taking them on a visit to West Sussex glasshouse grower VHB Herbs.
RHS head of horticulture John David used the programme to call on the Government to support the industry. "If it wants to grow the economy, horticulture can do that," he said. "We know we have the jobs to bring people in. We know we can improve productivity."
On 15 April, BBC1's Bang Goes the Theory looked at Stockbridge Technology Centre's LED4Crops facility as part of an edition covering the pressures of feeding an increasing population.
Stockbridge science director Dr Martin McPherson told the programme: "We've seen the difficulties farmers have had in 2012 putting food on our table - we don't know if that's going to be repeated year-in, year-out."
He added: "Here, we can start to demonstrate to the industry what the real potential is of this technology."
Paignton Zoo's VertiCrop high-intensity tiered leafy salad-growing system also featured in the programme.
