Preventive sprays

Leaf miner: Maintain preventive sprays on young Aesculus spp. using Admire (EAMU 2013-0975), Gazelle SG, dimethoate or Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944).

Apple scab Damp and humidity will encourage further attacks. Monitor risk by using the Mills or Smith tables and check Pyrus, Sorbus, Crataegus, Pyracantha and Chaenomeles.

Fruit Remove all fruit from trees before despatch if a non-edible spray has been used this season to comply with pesticide and crop regulations.

Western flower thrip Control with Calypso, Dynamec or Conserve. Reintroduce predators seven-to-10 days after applications. Apply Macrocheles or Atheta to composts and Amblyseius cucumeris to foliage.

Frog hopper Control with Chess WG (EAMU 2012-1434), Decis (non-IPM), Savona, SB Plant Invigorator or Toppel 100 (non-IPM).

Scale insects Control with Chess WG (EAMU 2013-1434), Dursban WG, Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or SB Plant Invigorator. Remove sooty mould using Rovral WG (EAMUs required) or Bravo 500 (EAMU 2011-1130).

Hellebores Control leaf spotting from Coniothyrium hellebori using Cercobin WG (EAMUs and restrictions apply), Octave, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) or Switch.

Escallonia Apply foliar sprays of magnesium chelate to prevent older leaves yellowing. Apply Epsom salts at 20g/lt water as a spray to run-off.

Leatherjackets Present in sand beds and some will migrate into pots — similar damage to vine weevil larvae. Treat with nematodes or apply ferric phosphate-based slug pellets.

Spraying windows Unsettled weather makes it hard to spray regularly. Add an adjuvant into your tank (check pesticide labels first) for products to stay on crops for longer.

Top dressing Check nutrient status of older crops and top dress with Floranid Permanent, HortiTop, Sincron or Osmocote Topdress.

Root rots Control and prevent Pythium and Phytophthora spp. with Fenomenal, Prestop (EAMU 2012-0564), Previcur Energy (EAMUs required), Proplant or Subdue.

Phoma Control stem dieback on ceanothus, lavender and viburnum using Octave, Serenade ASO (EAMUs required), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) or Switch.
