Waitrose has launched an exclusive line of "Bubbleberries" - a variety of the musk or hautboy strawberry (Fragaria moschata) said to taste of bubblegum.

The upmarket retailer describes the Dutch-grown berries as a heritage variety, popular in the 19th centrury long before the invention of bubblegum.

Waitrose berry buyer Nikki Baggott said: "This is one of the most aromatic berries we have ever sold. We hope our customers will enjoy experimenting with this surprising flavour."

Bubbleberries will be in sale for five weeks at seven London Waitrose and John Lewis stores, retailing at £4.99 for 100g.
