Practical books for budget-conscious consumers

Two new titles available from garden centres show how keeping bees, ducks and geese in your garden could be a great way to save money.

Paul Peacock's Keeping Bees guide from Octopus Books' imprint Gaia, priced £10.99, explains how to look after a hive in a garden, backyard or even a roof terrace. Beekeeping relieves stress and makes use of the pollen from surrounding blooms. It also produces healthy and cheap honey.

British Beekeepers Association membership has risen by 11 per cent to 11,000 since 2006.

And while chicken eggs are cheap, duck and geese eggs are much more expensive, so keeping the birds is also becoming more worthwhile these days. Octopus Books' new guide Choosing and Keeping Ducks and Geese by Liz Wright, priced £12.99, shows you how.
