Margam Country Park in Neath, Port Talbot has won this year's Green Flag people's choice award.

Last year's winner Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets, London was the country's second most popular, while Maidstone's Mote Park earned third place.

Mote Park only secured it's green flag this year after improvements funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund were completed. The funding also paid for a community engagement officer Alan Frith who was taken on full-time by the council in August.

He said: "we're absolutely overwhelmed. For us it's very much a community park and we showed that by bringing the community with us today."

He added Maidstone Council had realised it needed to invest in the park so that it could get the community more involved and raise revenue.

The results were announced at an event this afternoon in Burgess Park, south London, hosted by Southwark Council and its contractor Quadron Services.

The event brought together charity bosses and representatives from the Department of Health and the Department for Communities and Local Government.
