Plantopia to develop nursery site to grow plants for its plastic hanging basket range

Horticultural designer and entrepreneur Chris Haley's company Plantopia will begin work this year on a 2.5ha bedding plant nursery near Lancaster incorporating a version of the openable glasshouse design that he pioneered with former business partner Naturelight.

"We will use it to grow bedding plants that will fill our hanging baskets," said Haley, speaking at the Four Oaks Trade Show. "It will be a showcase for Plantopia's products. But it will be another year before it's ready."

Plantopia has sold more than 750,000 plastic hanging baskets this year, including 250,000 through the Ideal World shopping channel.

The company recently introduced a stand for the baskets. This was in response to customer demand, Haley explained.
