Local paper reports suggested Mansfield District Council was considering shutting a leisure centre and plant nursery as part of proposals to balance its budget for 2010/11. But now councillors have said they want to keep the nursery open and make savings elsewhere.
The nursery grows plants for the district and 11 other local authorities.
GMB shop steward at the council Steven Ulyatt told the Mansfield Chad: "It is very good news. I think it is a valuable asset. There's a lot of kudos throughout the district through what the nursery produces. We consistently do well at Britain in Bloom and Tatton Park, and it reflects well on Mansfield as a whole. It is not just about money, there's more to it than that. I think with sound management and if we are more diligent about how we do things, I think it can operate viably."
