Petitioners fight to protect garden centre against school plan

More than 1,300 Mill Hill residents have signed a petition saying they would rather keep a Garden Centre Group garden centre than convert the centre into a Jewish school in the north London suburb.

They are urging Barnet Council to reject plans to build a Jewish free school on the site of a "much-loved" garden centre.

Etz Chaim Primary School, one of the first free schools to be approved by the Conservative-led coalition, is due to open as a single-form-entry Orthodox primary in September.

But the petitioners want the council to defer the decision because it would mean the closure of Wyevale Garden Centre in Daws Lane, if planning permission is granted.

The petitioners say they do not oppose the establishment of the school in principle.
