From The Nursery - Mildew controls

Downy mildew: Maintain controls on digitalis, geums, geraniums, Hebe, pansies, roses and Veronica.

Control infections using Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Fenomenal (EAMU 2013-1990), Fubol Gold WG (EAMU 2012-0217), Invader (EAMU 2012-0109), Paraat (EAMU 2011-2585), Percos (EAMU 2013-0819), Pergado Uni (EAMU 2012-1605), Revus (EAMUs required), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) Stroby WG, Subdue or Valbon (EAMUs required).

Vine weevil: Check vulnerable crops for further larvae and leatherjackets - some can still be active. Use drenches of nematodes or approved products containing chlorpyrifos.

EAMUs: Download the ones you need from the Chemicals Regulation Directorate website and check www.pesticides.gov.uk. Look at Actara (2008-2801), Admire (2013-1874), Bandu (2013-1856 and 2013-0557), Centric (2013-1875 and 2013-1860), Chess WG (2013-2016), Cortez (2013-1996), Custo-Fume (2013-1944), Decis (2013-1857), Fenomenal (2013-1990), Frupica SC (2008-2853), Previcur Energy (2013-1845) and Vivendi 200 (2012-2043). Changes occur regularly with re-registration and new products.

Bacteria: Clean up ornamental Prunus spp. foliage and stems from bacterial infections and cankers using Cuprokylt before leaf-fall.

Field preparations: Plough land now, especially if it gets waterlogged over winter, to allow frost to work for you and open up the structure.

Asulox: The last approved product containing asulam has been granted an emergency approval into 2014.

Botrytis: Cool nights can mean high dew levels on some crops. Ensure fans are working and switched on in tunnels and glasshouses. Open the doors and vents to encourage airflow. Keep crops clean - clear up plant debris. Control active infections using Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Octave, Rovral WG (EAMU 2011-3200), Serenade ASO (EAMUs required), Switch or Triptam. Check through cyclamen.

Soil sterilants: The current end use date of 31 December 2014 applies to products with metam-sodium and chloropicrin. Custo-Fume (chloropicrin) is available as an emergency approval (2013-1944) until 28 June 2014.

Caterpillars: Control using Decis, Dimilin Flo, Dursban WG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Insegar WG, Majestik, Pyrethrum 5EC, Spruzit, Steward, Tracer (EAMU 2008-2908) or Runner (EAMUs required).

I will not be importing oaks this season. Will you?

I find myself in a difficult situation. A few weeks ago I was fortunate to be present to hear details of imminent changes to regulations concerning Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) and oak trees. I heard details, asked questions and probed the implications of these changes. That may not sound like a difficult position to be in, yet I am uneasy.
