Researchers G and S Lazzerini and FP Nicese used the life cycle assessment methodology. Their analysis revealed that CO2 emissions are higher in container cultivation (26.1-34.7mg per hectare a year) than they are in field cultivation (2.3-6.6mg/ha a year).
Greenhouse horticultural crops were found to emit 2.2-10.3mg/ha a year and arable crop emissions were measured at 6.2mg/ha a year.
Different scenarios were tested for reducing emissions and a 15.5 per cent cut was achieved. Two of the scenarios applied 50 per cent less recycled water usage and 10 per cent of green waste recovery for substrates.
