From the nursery - Beating blight

Box blight Treat active disease infections with Octave, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) or Switch.

Spider mites Check ceanothus, choisya, convolvulus, fuchsia, Malus, Picea abies, Fraxinus, phormium and others. Danadim Progress, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or Sequel are useful on outdoor ornamentals. For protected ornamentals, rotate Borneo (EAMU 2008-1216), Dynamec, Envidor — not cordylines (EAMU 2012-0254), Masai, Oberon (EAMU 2004-1718) and Sequel (EAMU 2009-3061).

Powdery mildew Control fungal growth on azalea, aster, catalpa, Crataegus, Humulus, lonicera, Monarda, Quercus and Rosa with Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), AQ10 (EAMU 2012-1324), Attenzo (EAMU 2008-2814), Bumper 250EC (EAMUs required), Corbel, Cyflamid (EAMUs required), Flexity (EAMU 2008-2850), Folicur, Galileo (EAMU 2008-2855), Lyric, Nimrod, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141), Stroby WG or Takumi SC.

Red bud mite When budding trees, ensure bud ties are tight to prevent mites from entering behind the bud.

Undercutting An important summer job for trees that can reduce long feeder roots and produce smaller, active, dense root systems that establish well after planted out. It makes lifting easier in tightly packed soils and improves natural drainage during wet autumns.

Soil sterilisation Soils are warm enough for Basamid. Cover treated soil with polythene for better control, keeping areas weed-free until planting preparations are finished.

Aphids Continue using Aphox, Chess WG, Eradicoat, Majestik, Naturalis-L, Pyrethrum 5EC, Savona and SB Plant Invigorator along with predators. Focus sprays on new growth and crops including Fagus, ligustrum, prunus, philadelphus and viburnum. Non-IPM sprays include Calypso (EAMUs required), Decis, Dursban WG, Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) and Toppel 100.

Eelworm Avoid taking cuttings from weigela, philadelphus and buddleia showing angular patches on lower leaves. Vydate 10G (EAMU 2012-2322) will reduce pests. Do not move or touch plants for at least two weeks.

Leaf miner Check aquilegia, Betula, chrysanthemum, dianthus, delphinium, geum, ilex, iris, laburnum, Lathyrus, lonicera and others. Control using Calypso (EAMUs required), Decis, Dynamec, Dimilin Flo, Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or Toppel 100.
