No shortages yet say suppliers as garden centre sales kick off

Garden centres may be buzzing but shortages are a long way off, say retailers and suppliers.

Garden Centre Group had a record bank holiday weekend, with sales in most centres the best in any bank holiday for three years.

Buckingham Nurseries assistant general manager Mike Easom said: "Bank holiday Monday was a record takings day but there are no shortages. It might be a different story in the next two or three weeks if it keeps up. Summer bedding is flying out of the door."

Sinclair retail MD Danny Adamson said: "I’m happier but I don’t know if we’re going to catch up with 2012. Garden centres don’t think they are but they’re euphoric at the moment. Everybody is looking at year-on-year sales. It’s almost a crossover. As the season was dying last year, this one is taking off."

He added: "We’re not running short of anything yet and I don’t know of any customer that has been let down but if this carries on it could get a bit juicy. But we’re alright for stock and wagons."

He added that weedkiller and slugkiller sales are going well.
