On 21 December 2007 the EC proposed to change current legislation to improve industrial emissions across the EU. The commission aims to merge seven different acts to produce a coherent Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive.
Proposed revisions to the current IPPC Directive include lowering the thermal input threshold from 50MW to 20MW, which would bring a significant part of UK glasshouse production within the scope of the new directive.
But NFU horticultural adviser Chris Hartfield said: "It wouldn't capture anyone within the ornamentals sector as there's no one of the size and scale we are talking about. I would say there are half a dozen to a dozen sites affected and they are all edibles facilities."
