New software helps growers sell surplus electricity

A software package launched at Horti Fair allows growers with CHP units to optimise trading of surplus electricity. Developed by Priva in collaboration with Hijdra Agro-Automation, the Trade-Link package combines conventional climate-control software with access to energy-market pricing.

Hijdra business unit manager Kees van Grieken said: "As well as using the heat and CO2 from the boiler, you need the extra income from selling electricity and this tells you when it's profitable to turn it on. It's a more efficient use of gas and it makes the overall grid more stable, so the Dutch government wants to stimulate it."

Priva UK director Chris Addis said: "We think it's applicable to the UK market, but that would depend on getting the market information."
