New rose marks charity's 35th anniversary

David Austin Roses has launched a new rose at the Chelsea Flower Show to celebrate 35 years of charity Plant Heritage.

Rosa 'The Lady Gardener' was launched on Monday by national collection holders (NCH) Jane Lindsay (NCH Passiflora and Jasminum), Vicky Fox (NCH Heuchera), and Lorraine Birchall (NCH Rhodohypoxis & x Rhodoxis).

The rose is the first in the English Old Rose Group to have apricot flowers and a strong tea fragrance. Shropshire rose breeder David Austin Roses has a long relationship with the charity, holding a National Collection of Rosa (English Roses bred by David Austin) at its rose gardens.

David Austin rosarian Michael Marriott said: "It is such an important organisation - if it wasn't for Plant Heritage, a great many wonderful plants including roses, of course, would be lost forever. We maintain our own National Collection of English Roses here at the David Austin Nursery and by naming our new English rose 'The Lady Gardener', for Plant Heritage, we hope to raise more awareness about the charity's invaluable work."
