New Italian red pear variety takes Macfrut award

The red-skinned and fleshed Falstaff pear has claimed a "Macfrut Oscar" in the Italian show's fresh produce category.

Falstaff was entered by the Fruit Research Unit of the Council for Research and Experimentation in Agriculture, based in Forlì.

Researchers have taken over 20 years to perfect the variety, developed from Abate Fetel, the most widely grown pear in Italy.

It is described as similar in shape to its parent but with a spicier flavour reminiscent of vanilla and cinnamon.

The awards presentation concluded the three-day Macfrut 2012 event in Cesena, which ran from 26-28 September.
