New group to steer research for outdoor cucurbits sector

A new Outdoor Cucurbits Grower Group will be launched later this year to address a perceived shortfall in research relevant to the sector.

Under the auspices of the British Growers Association, it will initially be chaired by DGM Growers buying manager Peter Waldock.

He said: "Collaboration on new research required by this sector is necessary to ensure that our HDC (Horticulture Development Company) levy is spent on projects required by commercial growers."

He urged all outdoor cucurbit growers to attend the group's formal launch at NIAB's Courgette Variety Trials Open Day at its Cambridge trial site on 22 August, where they can contribute to shaping the group's research agenda.

Cucurbit growers have already held exploratory meetings with the HDC to establish research priorities for the sector, including the need for additional crop protection products.
