During his time in the trust's top horticultural role, Calnan, who retired this month, oversaw an increasing professionalism in researching, conservation planning and restoring gardens.

He helped to promote thinking around climate change and gardens and pioneering the development of environmental standards for gardens and parks.

He said: "Ahead are yet more challenges and opportunities as the trust moves further into the twenty-first century and explores how it can remain relevant and appealing to an ever-changing society."

The head of gardens role is now being advertised for the first time since 1988.
