National Trust displays art inspired by its landscapes

Stourhead hosts works by Turner and Constable inspired by its design

The National Trust is displaying works of art by the likes of Turner and Constable against the exact scenes that inspired them. The Art of the Garden is taking place at Stourhead in Wiltshire and will run until 30 August. It explores the relationship between landscape painting and the landscape garden. The show includes work from the 17th-century landscape painter Claude Lorrain, which inspired the design of the garden. Turner’s The Gothic Cross above the Lake at Stourhead has never been on public view before and was only recently discovered in the Tate archives.
